HOARDING DISORDER RESOURCES / SUPPORT GROUPS

DAY FIVE SEMINAR RECAP

Friday’s seminar was an open discussion, with the focus being Innovation and New Approaches. A lot of amazing participants came forward to offer both professional and personal experiences around the topic. A big focus was put on Hoarding Disorder resources / support groups.

Here is a recap of the key ones discussed.

Hoarding Disorder and Buried in Treasures Support Group

A place to share support and resources for those who struggle with compulsive acquiring, saving, and hoarding.
A diagnosis of HD requires all three of the following:
  • A person collects and keeps a lot of items, even things that appear useless or of little value to most people.
  • These items clutter the living spaces and keep the person from using the rooms as they were intended.
  • These items cause distress or problems in day-to-day activities.
This group is for individuals who have Hoarding Disorder / Behaviour

Dr. Chia-Ying Chou – YouTube

Welcome to my channel. I am a clinical psychologist and director at the San Francisco Center for Compassion-Focused Therapies (SFCompassion).

This channel my team at SFCompassion creates is dedicated to providing public education and self-help resources for people living with hoarding or clutter issues, and people who care to learn more about hoarding.

Besides this channel, you are warmly welcomed to checkout more resources about hoarding and mental health in general we share at #bettertreatmentforhoarding and #sfcompassion, respectively.

Clutterers Anonymous

Clutterers Anonymous℠ (CLA℠) is a fellowship of individuals who share their experience, strength, and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem with clutter and help each other to recover.

We achieve this as individuals, groups, and a fellowship by practicing our 12 Steps of recovery and by being guided by our 12 Traditions.  Each of them embodies a set of principles for living life effectively, inside and outside CLA. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop cluttering.

There are no dues or fees for membership; we are self-supporting through our own 7th Tradition contributions, neither soliciting nor accepting outside donations.

Our fellowship is based on suggestion, interchange of experience, rotation of leadership and service.

CLA is not affiliated with any public or private organization, political movement, ideology, or religious doctrine; we take no position on outside issues.

Our primary purpose is to stop cluttering one day at a time and to carry this message of recovery to clutterers who still suffer.

This group is for individuals who have Hoarding Disorder / Behaviour

CLOUDS END WHATSAPP / ZOOM SUPPORT GROUP

Clouds End offer a closed group WhatsApp chat and monthly zoom support group for individuals with Hoarding Disorder / Behaviour.

This is a safe space to come together to discuss their own experiences, support tactics and help encourage each other along their hoarding support journey’s. It is great networking aid for those looking to find others in similar positions.

Participants can stay silent too, you are welcome to join and not respond / speak. It can be an overwhelming process at first, so we want to reassure everyone they are welcome regardless of how confident they feel in taking part. Being a silent viewer can still be very beneficial for finding tips / tricks and building confidence in your own support journey.

CLUTTER IMAGE RATING

clutter rating form

The clutter image rating scales were created so the level of Hoarding within a home/room can be assessed correctly.

These are useful for all industry professionals to be able to gage the different severity levels of a hoarded home.

For example, they are especially useful for services that come into contact with client homes such as the fire service/carers/housing officers/social workers etc.
Having very detailed knowledge on Hoarding is not part of their basic job role but given they visit homes day in day out they are usually the first to pick up on Hoarding.
The clutter image rating is a simple tool they can follow to judge if they might need to refer a client to hoarding support services.

The image rating scale can also be helpful for clients, especially in the early stages of their hoarding support journey. It can be an indicator of when it might be time to seek professional support and then a way to communicate the severity level to them.

FREE FIRE CHECKS

The fire service within the UK offer free safe and well checks, they will visit a clients home and help them to establish safe exit routes in the event of an emergency and also help to spot and advice with the biggest initial hazards.

This can then leave the client to take as much time as needed to focus on the rest of the recovery, knowing their home is in a safe state.

If you google search your nearest fire service, information on how to book can be found.
